Rick May
Rick May, MD, has more than twenty-five years of experience in healthcare, including working as an orthopedic trauma surgeon, clinical quality improvement expert, and quality data analytics scientist.
Dr. May is a national speaker on healthcare quality and past-president of the Colorado State Medical Society. In addition, Dr. May has real-world experience helping hospitals improve financial performance through targeted improvements in clinical quality and patient care.
During his fifteen years leading clinical quality improvement consulting teams, Dr. May has worked with hundreds of US hospitals to address their most complex challenges and help them improve quality and clinical care. He has extensive experience implementing evidence-based programs and systems to decrease complications, mortality, adverse events, and readmissions. He has developed leading-edge consulting programs that have been shown to rapidly improve surgery quality, performance on national quality scorecards, and hospital quality departments and systems; and decrease sepsis, infections, and a wide variety of complications. He leverages informed insights to consistently engage physicians, nurses, and other hospital staff around a shared vision of quality for their hospitals and implement durable systems to sustain improvements.
Dr. May received his undergraduate degree in business economics. His graduate work was in advanced mathematics and biostatistics. He worked as a computer programmer and analyst at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where his primary focus was developing artificial intelligence (AI)-driven systems to guide astronaut fitness programs on the International Space Station.
Dr. May completed medical school, graduating with his MD with honors, and his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Colorado. He completed his orthopedic trauma training at Denver Health.
