Kalyan Dasgupta’s areas of expertise include antitrust and competition policy, economic regulation and intellectual property litigation.

Kalyan Dasgupta is a competition and regulatory economist with significant international experience. His experience has included vertical mergers and mergers at retail, abuse of dominance litigation cases, fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory (FRAND) disputes, antitrust implications of infrastructure sharing, bundling, tying, vertical leveraging, analysis of buyer power, coordinated effects and implications of information sharing. He has significant expertise in implementing economic approaches to intellectual property litigation and FRAND issues and has worked on several of the largest disputes in this area. He has significant experience with econometric analysis. On an industry basis, he has analysed competitive issues in Natural Gas Liquids and petrochemicals, professional data services, retail and wholesale gasoline, broadcasting distribution, air cargo, pipelines, news media and credit cards. He also has analysed economic issues related to multisided markets and platforms in several cases.

Mr. Dasgupta has filed expert reports or been retained as an expert in proceedings before the Patents Court in England, courts in the Germany and Netherlands (on FRAND issues), the Competition Tribunal in South Africa, the Ontario Energy Board and National Energy Board in Canada and the Delhi High Court in India. His broader experience at BRG encompasses cases in Australia and litigations in the United States.

Mr. Dasgupta also has extensive experience in the telecommunications sector on a range of cases spanning regulatory reviews of wholesale broadband pricing to analysis of mergers and network sharing deals. He also has experience in analysing regulatory issues in natural gas and crude oil pipelines. From 2004 to 2010, as a researcher at London Business School and a consultant, he undertook assignments that captured the impact of mobile telecommunications and information and communications technology (ICT) on the wider economy. He was the coauthor of the Connectivity Scorecard, an index ranking of how effectively countries used telecommunications and ICT.

Mr. Dasgupta has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics and has taken additional coursework in econometrics, operations research and management.
