Professor Hemant K. Bhargava is Distinguished Professor of Management, and the Jerome and Elsie Suran Chair in Technology Management, and Director of the Center for Analytics and Technology in Society, at the University of California Davis.
Professor Bhargava is an award-winning author of articles on the digital economy, platform businesses, and tech-driven industries including healthcare, media, and mobile. An accomplished economist, He has studied Information Systems, Operations, and Economics, and has a Ph.D. in Decision Sciences from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He conceived and directed the UC Davis Master of Science in Business Analytics program, which was launched in 2016.
In 2017, the INFORMS Journal on Computing awarded Professor Bhargava its 2017 “Test of Time” award for his 2007 paper on search engines and INFORMS Information Systems Society conferred a Distinguished Fellow. In 2021 Chief Data Officer Magazine named him one of the Top Academic Data Leaders for innovative ideas leveraging data and analytics that provide real-world results. He was awarded a Research Excellence Gift from Google in 2017-2018.
Much of Professor Bhargava’s research has concentrated on how the distinctive characteristics of digital economy products influence competitive strategies for digital businesses, and the implications of these strategies and their outcomes for competition and regulatory policy. His recent work has focused on the economics of platform ecosystems. His 2022 paper, “Fending Off Critics of Platform Power: Doing Well by Doing Good” was the winner of the Best Paper Award at the Conference on Information Systems and Technology in 2021.
As a consultant and as a scholar-in-residence, Professor Bhargava has helped large tech companies solve real-world business problems, including auction design in advertising-driven platforms, pricing of software services, and technology deployment, as well as addressing competition policy issues.
