Gene Bolton has over ten years of AML, CFT, and sanctions compliance experience, working with banks, broker-dealers, money services businesses (MSBs), insurance companies, fintechs, and virtual asset service providers (VASPs) to meet regulatory requirements and manage financial crime risk.

Gene Bolton is a director in the Financial Institution Advisory practice at BRG and specializes in anti-money laundering (AML), combating the finance of terrorism (CFT), and sanctions compliance.

Before joining BRG, Mr. Bolton conducted independent reviews, financial crime risk assessments, and monitorships to evaluate governance, transaction monitoring, information sharing, market surveillance, blockchain tracing, and Know Your Customer (KYC) programs, including customer identification program (CIP), customer due diligence (CDD), and enhanced due diligence (EDD). He has held multiple secondments reporting directly to C-suite executives, where he helped to enhance, sustain, and operationalize AML and sanctions compliance controls. Mr. Bolton also has evaluated, designed, and implemented target operating models for both onshore and offshore compliance operations. He has led engagements involving external stakeholders, including engagements under privilege with external counsel and assessments for clients’ banking partners.

Mr. Bolton has extensive experience in advising clients through regulatory matters involving federal and state agencies including the Department of Justice, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Federal Reserve, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Office of Foreign Assets Control, and New York State Department of Financial Services. As part of this experience, Mr. Bolton has helped clients address and respond to regulators and implement corrective actions.

Mr. Bolton was previously a director in an international management consulting firm’s Financial Crime, Fraud, and Investigative Services group; and worked in Financial Crimes Compliance for a major financial institution as an AML compliance analyst.

Mr. Bolton has an MA from Seton Hall University’s School of Diplomacy and International Relations.
