As a managing director, Dr. May will collaborate with hospitals on a wide range of clinical quality improvement initiatives, including enhancing outcomes related to complications, lengths of stay (LOS), mortality, readmissions, infections and adverse events.
After 17 years of private practice as an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. May has spent the last decade as a preeminent healthcare consultant. Prior to joining BRG, he built and scaled a national Healthcare Quality and Performance Improvement consulting practice from the ground up. Under Dr. May’s leadership, the practice experienced rapid growth, serving more than 100 clients through clinical quality improvement initiatives at leading health systems. Dr. May also led the development of nine groundbreaking consulting products and several advanced data analytics tools to help hospitals improve quality metrics, reduce readmissions and enhance patient outcomes.
Dr. May previously led and managed a clinical quality improvement team, where he directed initiatives focused on improving patients’ lives across the country, and as a senior medical director he spearheaded care improvement programs for injured workers. The novel programs he launched included development of new data analysis tools to understand physician performance and the “Provider Opioid Report,” which encourages physicians to review and optimize their opioid prescriptions.
“Rick is truly one of the founding fathers of healthcare quality and performance improvement in the United States,” said David Wildebrandt, a managing director and one of the leaders of BRG’s Healthcare practice. “His unrivaled insight into the operational and clinical challenges facing today’s hospitals and health systems will bring immense value to BRG’s clients. We are thrilled to have him join our growing team.”
At BRG, Dr. May will develop and apply innovative, data-driven solutions to help tackle hospitals’ most urgent obstacles and improve their quality and patient care. His areas of specialization include surgery quality improvement, heart failure management, sepsis care, infection control, ambulatory surgery center optimization and enhancement of quality management systems.
“I am honored to join BRG’s talented team of healthcare experts,” said Dr. May. “The firm’s dedication to innovation perfectly aligns with my experience leveraging technology and data analyses to develop cutting-edge clinical quality programs. I look forward to partnering with my new colleagues and hospital leaders to drive meaningful improvements that can help improve the lives of patients nationwide.”
