Global expert services and consulting firm BRG announced that Dr. Ai Deng has joined the firm’s Antitrust and Competition group as a managing director in Washington, D.C.
A renowned economist and thought leader, Dr. Deng brings nearly 20 years of experience in economic consulting, academic research and project management. He has advised clients in some of the largest cartel, market manipulation and monopolization cases over the past decades and has worked with the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, and Federal Trade Commission on merger investigations, financial market manipulation and more. He counsels clients across a variety of industries, including high-technology and artificial intelligence (AI), finance and commodities, computer software and hardware, digital advertising, automotive, real estate, chemicals, vitamins, energy, multisided platforms and publishing.
A prolific writer and expert on antitrust issues that arise with new technologies, Dr. Deng’s research—on econometrics, predictive analytics, causal inference, market manipulation, class actions and the intersection between technology (AI and blockchain) and antitrust—has been published in numerous prominent academic journal publications and book chapters.
“Ai’s strong background in econometric tools will complement the work we do with proposed class action certification in antitrust matters. His multidisciplinary background and technical expertise also includes AI, machine learning and data science and will be invaluable to our clients navigating an increasingly complex regulatory landscape,” said David Sunding, vice chairman of BRG and leader of the firm’s Antitrust and Competition practice.
In addition to his consulting practice, Dr. Deng is an external resource for the Romanian National Council for Scientific Research, a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University and an editor of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Antitrust Source magazine. He regularly speaks on antitrust implications of technologies at events sponsored by the Competition Bureau of Canada, Peru’s antitrust authority and the ABA.
“BRG has long been a leading voice when it comes to antitrust and competition issues that arise in today’s digital economy and platform markets,” said Dr. Deng. “I’m pleased to take this exciting next step in my career and collaborate with the firm’s deep bench of experts across the globe.”
Dr. Deng holds a PhD in economics and econometrics from Boston University. He joins BRG from a global consulting firm.
